Bavaro Adventure Park: Our Full-Day Dominican Republic Adventure

Bavaro Adventure Park: Our Full-Day Dominican Republic Adventure

If you're looking for a day in Punta Cana that involves a little more than sitting by the pool with a drink in your hand, Bávaro Adventure Park definitely deserves a look. During our Dominican Republic honeymoon, my husband and I decided to spend a full day at the park, and somehow that one day managed to include dune buggies, horseback riding, ziplining, a Dominican cultural experience, a sacred river, cenotes, tubing, a flat tire, and me losing a Croc to a body of water. 😂

We booked the Full Day Access with Roundtrip Transportation through Viator for about $267 total for the two of us. We chose the 9 AM time slot, and before booking, I misunderstood what that time actually meant. So let me save you from making the same mistake we did.

Booking Our Excursion

I booked our Bávaro Adventure Park tickets through Viator. We selected the full-day access option with roundtrip transportation because I wanted the convenience of having transportation arranged rather than figuring out how to get to the park ourselves.

When I saw the 9 AM time slot, I assumed that meant our transportation would pick us up from the resort at 9 AM.

It did not.

Our actual pickup was earlier.

We had gone downstairs around 7 AM to have breakfast at The Spoon while we waited for our ride. Around 7:30 AM, I received a phone call from the driver telling me that he was already at the resort waiting for us.

Cue the panic.

We hadn't even taken a bite of our breakfast, and our bags were still upstairs in the room. Thankfully, the driver was able to let us know that we could make the 10 AM park slot instead and would pick us up around 9 something.

After hanging up, I immediately started digging through my Viator information trying to figure out how I had missed the pickup time. That's when I discovered the message feature in the Viator app.

Apparently, the driver had been sending me messages.

I just didn't realize that was where the messages were coming through. 🤦🏽‍♀️

So here's my first tip: don't just look at your admission ticket. Check the messages in the booking app and confirm your transportation pickup time before excursion day.

That one little detail would have saved us from starting our morning in complete chaos.

Getting to Bávaro Adventure Park

When our actual pickup time arrived, we met our driver and got onto the transportation van with several other passengers. We made a few additional stops to pick up other guests along the way, and the drive took around 45 minutes.

Once we arrived, there was a bit of a line to get inside. We completed the required waivers, went to the reception desk, received our wristbands, and got information about the lockers.

There were different locker sizes available, and we chose the larger locker. I believe it cost around $10.

Since we knew we were going to be doing activities where loose belongings weren't allowed, we decided it was worth paying for a secure place to leave our things.

I had brought a waterproof phone pouch with a lanyard, but the park's instructions indicated that loose items couldn't be taken on certain activities, including the dune buggies, horseback riding, and zipline. So I decided to play it safe and leave my phone in the locker.

Looking back, I'm glad I did. We eventually used the phone pouch for the Sacred River, but I wouldn't have wanted to risk losing my phone during the other activities.

Dune Buggy Adventure

Our first major activity was the dune buggy ride.

And let me tell you, these buggies looked like they had seen some things. 😂

We were getting ready to sit down for what we thought was going to be a safety briefing when the guide suddenly said something along the lines of, "Alright! You guys ready? Let's go!"

And we were like...

Wait.

What about the briefing?!

Apparently, we had missed it, so we basically had to figure things out as we went.

The ride itself was pretty rough. Less than five minutes into the ride, our buggy stopped working, and we had no idea what was wrong. One of the guides had to come over and help us.

Eventually, we learned that because the terrain was so bumpy, the gear could shift and cause the buggy to stall. Once we figured out that we needed to hold the gear in place, we were good to go.

The actual ride lasted around 15 minutes, and despite the rocky start, we had fun.

My advice, though? Pay attention during the briefing. 😂 Even if you're excited to get moving, make sure you understand how the buggy works before you take off.

A Little Dominican Culture Along the Way

After the dune buggy ride, we were directed toward a traditional Dominican house. It was really cute and interesting to see, especially because it gave us a little glimpse into Dominican culture beyond the resort.

From there, we made our way to a Dominican shop filled with local products and souvenirs. They had things like coffee, hot chocolate, coconut oil, and other local items available to purchase.

They also allowed us to sample some of the products.

I don't drink coffee, but I figured, we're in the Dominican Republic, so why not try it?

I tried it.

I still don't like coffee. 😂

But the hot chocolate?

FIRE.

I loved it so much that I ended up buying a bag to take home.

We also got to try mamajuana, a traditional Dominican drink typically made with rum, wine, honey, herbs, spices, and tree bark. I'm not usually someone who gets excited about alcoholic drinks, but this was probably one of the best alcoholic drinks I've ever tasted.

My husband liked it enough that he bought some to take home.

So yes, Bávaro Adventure Park managed to get me to buy hot chocolate and my husband to buy mamajuana before we even finished all of our activities.

Finding Our Way Around the Park

After that, we wanted to tackle some of the activities where we couldn't bring our phones.

This was when we discovered that navigating the park wasn't always the easiest thing for us.

We got turned around a few times trying to figure out where we were supposed to go. There were signs, but we either weren't reading them correctly or weren't quite sure which activity we were supposed to do next.

The biggest thing we didn't realize was that there was a specific order for some of the activities and that we were assigned to a particular group that we were supposed to stay with.

We honestly thought we could walk around the park and choose whichever activity we wanted to do next.

We had no idea we were supposed to be following a group or sticking to a certain sequence.

Eventually, we found our way to the Jungle River area, where one of the employees asked whether we had already done the dune buggies.

We said yes.

Then he asked whether we'd done horseback riding.

We said no.

He directed us toward the next activity we needed to complete before coming back for the zipline.

That was when we started realizing that there was apparently more structure to the activities than we initially understood.

So if you're visiting, ask right away whether you're assigned to a specific group and whether there's an order you need to follow for the activities. That would have saved us from wandering around and trying to figure everything out ourselves.

Ziplining Through the Dominican Republic

Now let's talk about the zipline.

I thought there were two completely separate zipline experiences, with one ending in the water and another staying above ground.

That wasn't exactly how it worked.

Once we climbed up to the first platform, the employee explained that we'd be going across multiple zipline platforms, with the final zipline ending in the water.

And when I say these platforms were HIGH...

They were HIGH.

I could see over the trees and out toward the mountains in the distance. It was beautiful, but I was also very aware that I was extremely high in the air.

Then the employee gave us our instructions:

"Legs up. Lean back. Go."

That phrase has been living rent-free in our heads ever since.

Every platform was basically the same:

Legs up.

Lean back.

Go.

Go.

GO.

And every time I was like, "Wait... I'm scared!" 😂

But once we actually started moving, it was so much fun. It seemed like each platform took us higher and higher, which made the views even better.

Then we reached the final platform.

This was the one that ended in the water.

We were told that once we got close enough to the water, we needed to put our legs backwards with our heels touching our butts.

So that's exactly what I did.

I reached the water.

And my Crocs flew off.

Just... gone.

I climbed out of the water and stood there waiting for my husband, completely barefoot.

Thankfully, the staff were able to fish my Crocs out of the water.

Unfortunately, one of the straps ripped.

So my Crocs survived the Dominican Republic, but they did not survive Bávaro Adventure Park.

😂

They're still technically wearable, but I can no longer put that one into sports mode.

Next time, I'm wearing actual water shoes.

And that's one of my biggest packing recommendations for this excursion: bring proper water shoes.

Horseback Riding

Next up was horseback riding.

This was actually my first time riding a horse, so I was pretty excited about it.

My husband had ridden horses before and isn't really a fan, so he was much more indifferent about the whole experience.

We got onto our horses and started along the trail.

At one point, an older couple somehow ended up walking along the trail in front of our line of horses. They appeared to be lost, and the guides were trying to help direct them toward the correct path.

Eventually, they found where they needed to go and we continued along the trail.

Overall, horseback riding was fun. I enjoyed being able to say I'd finally ridden a horse, but I'm not sure it's something I'll be rushing to do again.

I kept thinking, "What happens if this horse takes one wrong step?"

I need a seatbelt, y'all. 😂

The entire time I felt like one unexpected movement and I was going to slide right off.

So while I'm glad I tried it, I don't know that horseback riding has earned a permanent spot on my vacation itinerary.

Finally... The Sacred River

Now we get to the activity I was most excited about.

The Sacred River.

After completing our other activities, we went back to our locker, grabbed our phones, put them into our waterproof phone pouches, and headed toward the entrance.

And that's when another funny moment happened.

One of the employees stopped us and asked:

"Are you Kailynn?"

I said yes.

He told us they had been looking for us.

Apparently, the group was looking for two women, not a man and a woman.

So while they were looking for us, we were just over here doing our activities. 😂

This was when it really clicked that we had been assigned to a group and were apparently supposed to stay with them. We hadn't understood that earlier, which explained why the staff had been trying to track us down while we were off doing different activities.

So if you're visiting, make sure you know which group you're assigned to, where you're supposed to meet them, and whether there's a specific activity order. We definitely would've saved ourselves some confusion if we'd known that from the beginning.

Eventually, we made our way to the Sacred River.

We removed our shoes, grabbed our life jackets, and headed down the stairs.

And then...

WOW.

The Sacred River was one of the most beautiful and breathtaking experiences of our entire Dominican Republic trip.

Swimming Through the Sacred River

The water throughout the Sacred River varied in depth. There were areas where I could comfortably stand and other areas where I couldn't.

I'm also going to admit something:

I am not the strongest swimmer. 😂

There were points where my husband had to pull me along by my life vest so I could keep up with him.

But that honestly made the experience even more memorable.

We made our way through the river and encountered waterfalls that we could walk out of the water toward. Eventually, the river led us into a large cenote.

It was absolutely beautiful.

And one of the best parts?

We practically had the entire experience to ourselves.

For most of our time in the Bávaro Adventure Park, we didn't have other guests around us. That made the experience feel peaceful and almost surreal.

We spent some time swimming in the cenote, taking pictures and videos, and just enjoying the scenery.

This was easily one of my favorite parts of the entire excursion.

The Blue Lagoon

After leaving the Sacred River, we made our way toward the Blue Lagoon.

When we arrived, we realized that this was another cenote, but there were quite a few other guests in the water.

Since we'd just had such a peaceful experience in the Sacred River, we decided not to get in.

Instead, we moved on to lunch.

Dominican Lunch

Our excursion included a Dominican lunch, which consisted of chicken, rice, and plantains.

And yes, it was good.

After spending hours doing physical activities and swimming, we were definitely ready to eat.

One thing to keep in mind is that drinks weren't included with the meal, so we had to purchase our own.

After lunch, we headed back toward the Jungle River.

Floating Down the Jungle River

The Jungle River was the perfect way to wind down after all the activities we'd done earlier.

We climbed into our tubes and let the water carry us down the river.

There was something incredibly peaceful about not having to do anything. We just floated, relaxed, and let the current take us.

The ride lasted around 15 minutes, and we actually went around a second time.

After spending the day climbing, riding, swimming, and ziplining, floating down the river was exactly the kind of low-key activity we needed at the end.

And just like that, our day at Bávaro Adventure Park was over.

Then... We Got a Flat Tire

We gathered our things, grabbed the souvenirs we'd purchased, and boarded the transportation back to the resort.

About ten minutes into the ride, we got a flat tire.

Of course we did.

😂

The driver was understandably frustrated and immediately contacted his company. We were told that someone would come pick us up, and surprisingly, another vehicle arrived within about five minutes.

The actual response was quick, which I appreciated.

But I won't lie: being parked on the side of the road as it started getting dark was a little scary.

Thankfully, we eventually got back on the road and made it safely back to our resort.

At thes.at point, we were exhausted, but we had definitely gotten our money's worth in experiences.

What I Would Do Differently

If I did Bávaro Adventure Park again, there are a few things I'd change.

First, I'd confirm my transportation pickup time. Don't assume the time on your admission ticket is your pickup time. Check your booking messages and make sure you know exactly when the driver is coming.

Second, I'd wear proper water shoes. My Crocs technically worked, but the zipline proved that they weren't secure enough for everything we were doing. My next pair of shoes would be actual water shoes that can handle water, rocks, and physical activities.

Third, I'd ask about the group system and activity order as soon as I arrived. We didn't realize that we were assigned to a group or that certain activities needed to be completed in a particular order. Because of that, we spent some time wandering around trying to figure out where we were supposed to go, while the staff were eventually looking for us. Knowing the group system from the beginning would've made the day much smoother.

Was Bávaro Adventure Park Worth It?

Absolutely.

I would go back to Bávaro Adventure Park again.

There were a few hiccups, from misunderstanding the pickup time to the buggy stalling, getting turned around in the park, losing a Croc, and ending the day with a flat tire.

But honestly?

Those things became part of the story.

The Sacred River alone made the excursion worth it for me. Swimming through the river, seeing the waterfalls, and ending up in that beautiful cenote was an experience I'll remember for a long time.

The zipline was also a lot of fun, even though I was nervous at first. Horseback riding gave me a new experience, and the dune buggy ride was an entertaining way to start the day.

And the Dominican cultural experiences, especially trying the hot chocolate and mamajuana, were an unexpected bonus.

I'd definitely recommend this excursion to travelers who want an active day and don't mind getting wet, dirty, sweaty, or a little lost along the way.

Just remember:

Confirm your pickup time.

Wear water shoes.

Ask about your group and activity order.

And when the zipline worker tells you...

"Legs up. Lean back. Go."

You better listen. 😂
